ARCH 1101 - "Before the studio session" anthology

A. Creative high school work

These two pictures are digital screenshots of my HSC Major Design Project for Design and Technology. I designed a purpose built basketball stadium on Sydney harbour with the aim of making Basketball a more popular and approachable sport to a larger mass audience. Doing this project for the entirety of year 12 is what got me interested in architecture. It turned into something much bigger than I expected and was one of the few aspects of the year 12 workload that I actually looked forward to doing. The design is split up into a number of precincts, for work, entertainment, leisure and travel/transport. I used google sketchup to build it which i discovered to be a very effective CAD program. Accompanying the CAD design was an extensive folio covering a range of areas regarding materials, time management and other such related issues.

B.Great piece of Architecture

Falling Water, a house designed by American Architect Franklin Lloyd Wright, is one of my favourite residential pieces of Architecture. The house is appealing because it is highly integrated with the environment around it. Wright designed the house with the idea that it would appear to be 'floating' over a waterfall, and that the house's residents would be able to hear the waterfall constantly, and be in touch with nature and water. The use of materials on this house is very evident in a wide range of American house styles to follow, and the hard angular lines evoke power in nature. The house is both integrated, and somewhat detached from its environment. Now, the house is a museum.

C. Something Beautiful

A pair of sneakers I own. I have a large collection of sneakers and think the designs, use of materials and colour combinations are beautiful and at the leading edge of fashion. This particular shoe is known as a Nike Air Force One, released in 1982, and is Nike's most successful selling sneaker of all time. Sales average somewhere around 15 million pairs a year, and the shoe by itself is the fifth largest shoe company in the world. Nike is rumored to have released over 5,000 different colourways of these sneakers since 1982. I received this pair for my birthday in 2006 and to the say the least was quite excited to receive them. They are extremely comfortable to wear and I usually save them to wear for only the most special of occasions.
